The Bombay High Court today issued a contempt notice to an officer of the Women and Child Welfare Department for not deciding the remuneration of office bearers of the Commission for Protection of Child Rights despite an earlier order.
Division bench of justices Abhay Oka and A A Sayed asked Vinita Singhal to file an affidavit by August 10 explaining why action for contempt of court not be taken.
The court, while hearing a public interest litigation, had asked the government to fix the remuneration of the chairperson and members of the Commission and then issue an advertisement for their appointment.
However, the government issued the advertisement without deciding the remuneration first.
The high court was of the opinion that unless the remuneration was decided, better and experienced candidates would not apply.
Public Prosecutor Purnima Kantharia said the government had taken steps to increase the remuneration of office bearers, and sought time to formulate a scheme in this regard.
The judges refused to give time to the government to formulate a scheme and instead issued a contempt notice to the officer of Women and Child Welfare Department.
