WIAA's 'Women's Rally to the Valley' to be held on April 7

An all-woman car rally will be organised on April 7 with an aim to push for legislation and policies for women's empowerment and their working rights.

The Western India Automobile Association's (WIAA) annual 'Women's Rally to the Valley' will be held on April 7, it was announced here Tuesday.

Making the announcement at a media briefing, WIAA executive chairman Nitin Dossa claimed this will be an all- woman car rally where besides drivers, the marshals and officials who are part of the event will be women.

Even the medical doctors and surgeons, who will be at the rally, will be women, said Dossa, who was flanked by Smita Dandekar, Chairperson, Women's Rally, and a participant, Sneha Sharma, at the press meet.

This TDS (Time-Distance and Speed) rally is entering its sixth year and would be flagged from Worli in South Mumbai at around 7 AM,it was announced.

The rally will culminate at the Aamby Valley, a township near the famous hill station of Lonavala in Pune district.

"The goal of the women's rally is to advocate legislation and policies for women's empowerment and for their working rights," said Dossa.

So far, 80 registrations have been received for the rally, where only four-wheel cars will be allowed to participate, Dossa said.

The day-long Rally, presented by J&K Tyres, will culminate at Aamby Valley near Pune.

Dossa said there was no specific criteria for the women drivers to take part in the rally and the only thing they needed is a driving licence.

Viveck Goenka, president of WIAA, Asia's premier motoring institution, in a statement said, "As the WIAA was entering its centenary year it would organise the first international expedition for women drivers in October from Guwahati.

"This will also support the cause of women's safety and create awareness amongst people to build a protective society for women.
