Wildcard Chilumula enters round two of women's tennis meet

India's Nidhi Chilumula made it to the second round of the USD 25,000 Ganesh Naik ITF Women's Tennis Championships, while another wild card recipient Prarthana Thombare crashed out of the event in Navi Mumbai today.
Nidhi, currently ranked 618 in the world, defeated compatriot Karman Kaur Thandi, a qualifier, 7-6(5) 6-3 in 1 hour and 45 minutes in a first round match of the tournament organised by the Navi Mumbai Sports Association at Vashi.
However, Asian Games doubles bronze medallist Prarthana went down to Natela Dzalamidze of Russia in straight sets in another opening round clash. Natele won 6-3 6-1.
There were two upsets. In the biggest upset of the day, unseeded Nina Stojanovic of Serbia, ranked 455, carved out a 6-0 7-6(10-8) win over second seed Sofia Shapatava of Georgia, who is ranked 248 and had won the USD 15,000 event at Lucknow last week.
In another surprise result, qualifier Chloe Paquet of France upset eighth seed Kamila Kerimbayeva of Kazakhstan 6-0 6-3 to make it to the round of sixteen.
