Police today used water canons and lathicharge to prevent Youth Congress workers from marching to the Punjab Assembly to protest against the Centre's alleged discriminatory stand on water sharing by the state.
Later, its leaders alleged that the Centre "favoured" sharing of Punjab's water through the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) Canal with Haryana and said they will not allow it to happen.
Led by its president Amarpreet Singh Lally, PYC today took out a protest march over the issue. State Congress chief Amarinder Singh expressed his solidarity with the cause and addressed them.
Addressing the party workers Lally claimed, "The Central government is favouring Haryana in the Supreme Court. It is not in favour of Punjab and its farmers".
The Centre has betrayed Punjab by opposing its stand on water sharing and supporting Haryana, he alleged.
"We will not allow Punjab's water to be shared through Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) Canal with Haryana. Punjab is not in a condition to share even a drop of water with others," the state Youth Congress chief said.

"Akali Dal is part of the Central government and they have forgotten the promises made to people of Punjab. If the Badals are concerned about the farmers of the state then they should snap their ties with BJP," Lally said.
Congress governments have always taken decisions in the interest of Punjab. In 2004 it had scrapped the water sharing agreements with neighbouring states and refused to give water to them, especially Haryana, he said.
The PYC's march to Punjab Assembly complex was stopped by police near Congress Bhawan at Sector 15 from where it began.
Water canons were used and the state Youth Congress activists were lathicharged, police said.
A PYC spokesperson claimed Lally and some of the party workers were injured.
Some of the PYC members were taken into preventive custody by police and later released.
