Union Minister Bandaru Dattatreya today said he would take up the issue of "growing menace" of liquor sale and consumption in Telangana with Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao.
"I will meet the Chief Minister and discuss this issue (evil effects of liquor sale and consumption)," Dattatreya said.
He was speaking at an event where senior BJP leader SV Seshagiri Rao concluded his 24-hour fast to highlight the menace of liquor.
Appreciating Seshagiri Rao, a retired professor, for taking up the fast at an age of 81, Dattatreya said it should open the eyes of the TRS government to the havoc being caused by liquor sale and consumption.
Recalling that the Chief Minister vowed to build a 'Golden Telangana', he said the lofty ideal is not possible when liquor sale and consumption is deep-rooted in the society.
Noting that there is one Primary Health Centre (PHC) per about 40,000 people, he expressed regret that one liquor bar existed for 11,000 to 20,000 people.
The Union Minister of State for Labour (independent charge) said his ministry would take up an awareness campaign on the issue.
BJP general secretary Muralidhar Rao said the party would organise an agitation on the issue.
