Will work for world peace: Justice Bhandari

"India is getting this chance after a gap of 22 years. Post-Independence India got chance when Dr Nagendra Singh had gone and then Chief Justice (R S) Pathak had also gone after which the country is now being represented again," Justice Bhandari said.

"I will work for world peace," he told reporters at the sidelines of function held to release 'Mosaic of Faith: Places of Worship in India', a book by writer Dharmendra Bhandari.

64-year-old Justice Bhandari, a senior Supreme Court Judge, will serve a 2012-18 term in the ICJ, which is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations based in The Hague, Netherlands.

Speaking on the occasion, Justice Bhandari said India is the home to all the leading religions of the world and it is the duty of the citizens to respect each others' religions.

Parliamentarian Dr Karan Singh, who also spoke on the occasion, also stressed on religious tolerance.

"We have always adopted and respected different customs, different facets, different cuisines, different methodologies of society and different religions," he said.

"India is a land where all the major religions of the world continue to flourish," he added.
