Police Sub-Inspector (SI) Vishwanath Prasad Rajak said Sudheshwari Devi was beaten to death at Kauabari Tola village under Meskaur police station in the district by a few drunken neigbours.
As Devi's son came home after consuming liquor and started abusing his neighbours, some of them, who were also drunk, started beating him, the police officer said.
Hearing the commotion, Sudheshwari came out and tried to shield her son. The attackers then thrashed her with sticks and spades.
The body has been sent for post-mortem and an FIR has been lodged against three persons who are still at large.
