A 29-year-old woman allegedly burned her two children to death before committing suicide by setting herself ablaze at their house in Kalyan city here, police said today.
The incident occurred yesterday after the husband of the woman, Anita Kanojia, left their house in Khadakpada area for his laundry shop.
Citing the complaint filed by the victim's husband, an official said "poverty" could be the cause behind the woman taking the extreme step.
Thane Police spokesperson Sukhda Narkar said Anita's husband Ajay Kanojia (30) had last spoken to her in afternoon when she called up on his mobile phone and asked him to bring milk for their children Nandini (2) and Durgesh (nine months).
"When Ajay reached home around 7:45 pm he didn't get any response from his wife and found the door locked from inside. He then entered the house through the window and found charred remains of his wife and two kids lying in front of the main door," Narkar said quoting the complaint.
He then called up the police who shifted the remains for post mortem.

"The complainant said his wife had spoken about poverty and weak financial condition of the family, which could be the trigger behind the incident," the officer said.
A case was registered under sections 302 (punishment for murder) of the IPC against the woman, she said, adding further probe was on.
In a separate incident yesterday, a woman allegedly committed suicide after strangulating her seven-year-old twins in Kharigaon locality of Kalwa in Thane as she was reportedly upset due to their sickness.
