The incident occurred yesterday after the husband of the woman, Anita Kanojia, left their house in Khadakpada area for his laundry shop.
Citing the complaint filed by the victim's husband, an official said "poverty" could be the cause behind the woman taking the extreme step.
Thane Police spokesperson Sukhda Narkar said Anita's husband Ajay Kanojia (30) had last spoken to her in afternoon when she called up on his mobile phone and asked him to bring milk for their children Nandini (2) and Durgesh (nine months).
He then called up the police who shifted the remains for post mortem.
