A woman, who gave birth at a civil hospital here, was sent home with a girl child though she claimed she had delivered a baby boy and discharge certificate given by the hospital to her supporting her claim.
Angry residents of her locality, led by BJP leader and former health and family welfare minister Satya Pal Gosain today sat on dharna outside the civil hospital, demanding that the woman's baby be returned to her.
Gosain told reporters he had informed Ludhiana Police Commissioner P S Gill about the incident, after which Gill marked an inquiry to the ACP concerned and ordered a DNA test of the newborn baby.
"Inquiry is a must as it appears to be a part of a racket, where a male child had been replaced by a girl at the hospital," Gosain said.
Sushila Devi, of Sahnewal town here, gave birth on September 30.
She and other members of her family were congratulated by the staff of the hospital when the "male child" was born, Devi told reporters.

However, she was handed over a female baby hours after the delivery, and when she protested, the staff did not listen, Devi claimed.
She was later discharged from the hospital.
Devi, the wife of a labourer, returned home with the girl child. One of her literate neighbours happened to see the discharge certificate issued by the hospital, which mentioned the birth of a male child.
Angry residents of the locality approached Gosain, after which he took up Devi's cause.
