A woman and her eight-year-old daughter died when they came under the wheels of a moving train while trying to board it near Delhi Cantonment railway station here today.
The woman's younger daughter who is five-years-old also came under the train but survived. However, her severely damaged arm had to be amputated, a police official said.
The deceased were identified as Vimla (30) and Poonam. Her younger daughter, Sia, is presently admitted at Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital, the official said.
According to the police, the incident was reported around 1 PM at the Nangal Rai Market railway crossing near Delhi Cantonment railway station.
Vimla, after picking her children from school, had gone to the station to board a train to their native village, Bhandari, in Rajasthan. But on reaching there they realised that the train had left.
So she decided to board the train from the Nangal Market crossing where it often stopped. On reaching there, they found the train moving slowly and Vimla tried to board it with both children in her arms but her foot slipped.
The other passengers standing near the entrance door failed to help them. The locals then informed the police.
While Vimla and Poonam died on spot, Sia, was rushed to the hospital by a police team.
Vimla worked at a factory near her residence in west Delhi's Uttam Nagar and financially support her family. Her husband, who is a labourer, is unwell and undergoing treatment in her native village, police said.
Vimla also has a 3-year-old son who was not accompanying his mother and sisters today.
