A 36-year-old housewife from Uttam Nagar in West Delhi, Kavita had to undergo kidney transplant and her mother initially agreed to donate one of her kidneys to her daughter. However, she backed out at the last minute when Kavita's mother-in-law, Vimla (65), came forward to donate one of her kidneys.
Dr Sunil Prakash, senior consultant and Director of Nephrology at BLK Super Speciality Hospital, said, "It is not a reel life story, but a real one with a happy ending. Kavita underwent successful kidney transplantation at the hospital. She is alright. It's amazing to see the relation between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law."
A team of doctors decided that she would have to go for renal transplant. However, her family was faced with the biggest challenge to find a first degree donor, which can only be amongst close family members like mother, father, husband, son or daughter, brother or sister.
"Finally her mother agreed for kidney donation. All investigations were completed but just before the transplant, her mother refused to give her kidney. At this point, her mother-in-law came forward which nobody expected. She really surprised us all," said Dr. Prakash.
