A woman today approached the Delhi High Court seeking a direction to the city government to provide proper facilities to homeless pregnant and lactating women residing at shelter homes here.
The woman, in her petition before a bench of Chief Justice G Rohini and Justice R S Endlaw, pleaded for "reinforcement" of the interim order of the court to the department concerned on providing Motia Khan shelter home residents with three meals a day.
She said the shelter home lacked adequate toilet, bathing area and kitchen facilities.
"It operates under very unhygienic conditions, is pest-ridden, and is home to several street dogs," the petition said, adding it also lacks any semblance of security or privacy.
Women and children in the Motia Khan shelter, particularly pregnant and lactating women, are arguably the most affected by the "terrible" living conditions and insufficient services, it alleged.
Taking note of the plea, the court said that it will pass an appropriate order on December 10.

The petition said on January 6, 2013, one woman had lost her two-month-old daughter due to the shelter home's inadequate living conditions.
Motia Khan home first opened in 2011 and today remains unfit for habitation, it said.
On February 1, 2013, the High Court had earlier directed improvement of living condition at the home.
