A habeas corpus petition was today filed in the Madras High Court by a woman seeking to produce her son, a friend of a youth who died in police custody here.
Petitioner Kavitha of Chintadripet apprehended about the safety of her 19-year old son Arunachalam as his friend Karthick died in custody at Kannagi Nagar Police station yesterday after being taken into custody together.
The petition is likely to come up for hearing tomorrow.
According to the petitioner, police picked up Arunachalam from their house in Chintadripet on September 19 and took him to Kannagi Nagar station without assigning any reason.
When she went there, she was not permitted to see her son.
She requested the police to produce her son before the magistrate concerned, but they did not respond and kept him in illegal custody.
Even assuming that her son was involved in any criminal activity, police ought to have produced him before the Magistratewithin 24 hours. But the police did not do so, she alleged and prayed for producing her son in the court and set him at liberty.
