A woman was allegedly conned into parting with Rs six lakh by a three-member gang from Andhra Pradesh for a 'gold bar', which turned out to be brass.
Police said the gang, including two women, had approached Usharani, who runs a hotel in Chinnipalayam area here, yesterday and convinced her that they had got some gold bars while working in a field and wanted to dispose it.
The trio told her that they wanted to sell it immediately for Rs 10 lakh before going to their native place as they feared they would be arrested.
Usharani then broke one edge of the bar to make sure it was 'gold' and then gave them Rs six lakh.
She realised her folly only when she went to a goldsmith, who told her it was a brass bar.
She then filed a complaint, police said, adding a search was on to nab the gang.
