Woman's body found hanging, mob torches house

A woman was found hanging at her in-law's residence at Jatrapur in Chakdaha police station area of Nadia district today triggering mob violence as the house was set ablaze and fire brigade prevented from reaching the site.
After finding the hanging body of Nayan Moni Mondal (23) on Mahasashti morning at her in-law's hosue locals ransacked the house and beat up her husband, the only one present at the spot, a police officer said.
The mob also set the house aflame after driving out the family members and prevented the fire brigade from dousing the blaze, the officer said.
The situation was brought under control and the crowd relented only after her husband Mintu Mondal was arrested, the officer said.

The woman's father Rafik Mondal, who hailed from Chakdah, lodged a complaint with the police which blamed the in-laws of constantly subjecting their daughter to mental and physical torture for dowry after the marriage nine months back, despite the bride's family paying Rs 1.60 lakh recently.
He also alleged the in-laws killed his daughter.
Police were on the look out for other family members of the in-laws household.
