Woman, son dead as SUV rams into school students

A woman and her son were killed and six school children injured after being hit by a speeding SUV near Rashakunja area within the limits of Bishnupur police station in South 24 Parganas district today.
Additional Superintendent of Police Chandra Sekhor Bardhan said the SUV was coming from Bankrahat at a very high speed and rammed into a group of students killing an 11-year-old boy and his mother.
Initial reports erroneously said seven persons, six of them school students, were killed in the accident, Bardhan said.
The students of Rashakunja High School for Boys and Girls were out of their respective school premises as classes were over for the day, the police said, adding, the driver did not slow down the vehicle and it hit the students.

Those injured were all within the age group of 10 to 15 years.
Agitated residents of Rashakunja ransacked the SUV but its driver managed to flee.
The mob also attacked a police team with bamboo sticks and stones injuring seven police personnel, Bardhan said.
Later, a large police contingent reached the spot and brought the situation under control. A search is on for the driver, Bardhan added.
