An AIADMK functionary, arrested in connection with the death of a 23-year-old woman techie here after a hoarding put up for his son's wedding fell on her, withdrew his bail petition filed in the Madras High Court on Thursday.
Apparently anticipating rejection of the plea, counsel for the petitioners Jayagopal and his brother-in-law Meganathan, who are co-accused in the case, requested Justice C V Karthikeyan before whom the petitions were pending, to permit to withdraw them.
Allowing the request, the judge dismissed the petitions as withdrawn after taking an endorsement of withdrawal from the counsel for Jayagopal and Meganathan.
In a recent hearing, the court has orally observed that a "daughter lost her life in the process of welcoming a daughter-in-law".
On September 12, Subashree, who fell on the road after being knocked off her two-wheeler by a banner erected for the wedding of Jayagopal's son, was fatally run over by a truck that was coming from behind.
On October 15, when Jayagopal pleaded that he had no role in erecting the hoardings, the judge had sought to know why he went absconding for 12 days after the incident if he had not done anything wrong.
