Women accused of gold smuggling remanded

: An Air India air hostess and a woman passenger, arrested from the Kozhikode airport for allegedly smuggling in gold bars wirth Rs 1.84 crore, were remanded to judicial custody by a court here today.
The two were brought here from Kozhikode to be produced before the Economic Offences Wing court. But since the concerned presiding officer was on leave, they were produced before the Judicial First Class Magistrate court which remanded them to judicial custody till November 22.
Air hostess Hiromasa V Sebastian, hailing from Wynad and Raahila from Thalassery in Kannur District, were arrested by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) from Kozhikode airport yesterday for smuggling six kg of gold bars from Dubai by hiding it around their waist.
Hiromasa is on leave for the past six months and had gone to Dubai on a personal visit.
DRI officials said in Kozhikode that the duo was suspected to have been brought in about 32 kg of gold on various occasions through the Kozhikode, Kochi and Chennai airports.
