Women's Day celebrated in Kolkata

On the occasion of International Women's Day, the city honored its women through various programmes where achievers were felicitated and rallies.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in a Facebook post also wished the 'Mothers and sisters of Bengal' on the occasion.
Calcutta High Court Chief Justice Manjulla Chellur was invited at the National Library to grace a Woman's Day programme where she felicitated legendary artist Rani Karnaa and Odissi Danseuse Sutapa Talukdar.
At the programme, instituted by Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan in collaboration with National Library authorities, Justice Chellur paid tributes to the rich cultural heritage of Kolkata and its women.
Danseuse Alakananda Roy, having staged various dramas with prison convicts from 'Balmiki Protibha' to 'Dhrubojyoti Tumi Jishu', was felicitated at a programme on 'Women Empowerment Felicitation Ceremony'.
"I am addressed as mother by my children in correctional homes. Only a mother can feel most connected with her children. Proud to be a mother and proud to be a woman," Alakakanda told PTI after the programme.

Dahan actor Rituparna Sengupta who was given the 'Nari Samman 2015' said, "The identity of a woman shouldn't be limited to her profession and family.
About incidents of women abuse, Rituparna said, "You should know how to protect yourself. You have to be brave...More than physical strength all we need to feel is that we are not a weak gender."
Veteran actor Sabitri Chatterjee, who was also the recipient of Nari Samman award by an NGO, said "The recent incidents of abuse and violence against women is alarming.
