Work on Gairsain Vidhan Bhawan project in Chamoli district began today with Speaker Govind Singh Kunjwal performing the "bhumi pujan" at the proposed site on the 14th foundation day of Uttarakhand.
Coming up at an estimated cost of Rs 80 crore, the Vidhan Bhawan at Gairsain, an emotive issue in Uttarakhand, is expected to give a boost to development activities in the hill regions of the state.
An assembly building in Gairsain is being seen by many as a partial fulfilment of the dreams of those statehood agitationists who wanted the capital of the state to be located in the hills.
The foundation stone of the Gairsain Assembly building was laid by the Chief Minister on January 14 this year.
The bhumi pujan ceremony was presided by Kunjwal and attended by Deputy Speaker Ansuya Prasad Maikhuri besides a host of senior govt officials.
