GMR group in collaboration with Megawide Corporation today kick-started expansion and modernisation work of the Mectan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) in Philippines by performing ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of Terminal 2 at the airport.
The ceremony was attended by President of Philippines Benigno S Aquino-III besides GMR group chairman G M Rao, chairman of the Megawide Corporation Michel Cosiquein and Business Chairman Airports of GMR Group Srinivas Bommidala besides other signatories, GMR infrastructure said in a regulatory filing.
GMR infrastructure, the infrastructure holding company of the Bengaluru-based conglomerate GMR group, had formed a joint venture with the Megawide Construction Corp of Philippines - GMR Megawide Cebu Airport Corporation (GMCAC) - to bid for the expansion and modernistion of Mectan-Cebu airport on Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) mode.
GMCAC won the USD 390 million award for the renovation, expansion and operations of the Mectan-Cebu Airport in April on BOT basis for 26 years in April 2014 and the JV officially took control of the airport last November.
"Today's ground-breaking ceremony marks another milestone in the exciting journey. The new terminal will be specifically developed to let passengers enjoy the Cebuano experience the moment they set foot in Philippines. Given our impressive record of building Delhi Airport and Istanbul in record time, we are confident that we will open T2 for passengers by mid-2018," the company said.
