A worker was killed today at a stadium being built in the city of Manaus, the sixth fatality as Brazil rushes to complete venues before the World Cup gets underway in June, officials said.
The 55-year-old Portuguese worker at the Arena Amazonia was gravely injured early today when part of a crane that was being dismantled fell, striking him on the head, construction officials said.
The worker, who later died from his injuries, is the third person to be killed while working at the site.
The stadium, where four World Cup matches are to be held, is one of five venues still under construction.
Its construction has been marred by several accidents, most recently December 14 when a worker was killed in a fall.
Another worker was killed at the site in March, also in a fall.
Two other people were killed November 27 in the construction of Sao Paulo's Arena Corinthians when a crane collapsed on part of the stands.
