A debt-ridden farmer, who suffered extensive crop damages in the recent bout of hailstorm and unseasonal rains in Maharashtra allegedly committed suicide here, police said today.
Bapu Ramchandra Pawar (62), a pomegranate grower from Bilpuri village in Satana taluka ended his life yesterday by consuming poisonous substance, they said.
Pawar's pomegranate farm on 7.5 acres of land was destroyed last week after hailstorm hit crops in several districts of the state.
According to police, Pawar had recently taken an agri-loan of Rs 4.5 lakh. But due to heavy losses in the unseasonal weather, he was worried about the repayment, which led him to take the extreme step.
This is the second farmer suicide in the tehsil after one Atmaram Pawar from Daregaon ended his life last week on account of crop damage caused by hailstorm.
