Cary directed the first season of the crime drama show which starred Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson among others.
The director, who was speaking at a panel discussion on the evolution of story telling on TV at the 18th Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival, said an Indian version of his popular show is not a bad idea.
"I am actually curious, how cool it would be to have an Indian 'True Detective'? Like this really good Hindu family, but the guy has a side girl or whatever," he said.
At the panel, he was joined byDirector of the Israeli TV series "Hatufim"Gideon Raff, filmmaker Nikhil Advani andStar Plus GM Gaurav Banerjee.

Advani has helmed the Indian version of the Israeli series "Hatufim", titled "Prisoners of War- Bandi Yudh Ke".
The pilot of the 126-episode long series premiered today at the festival.
Advani, who has helmed movie like "Kal Ho Na Ho", "D Day" and "Katti Batti", said adapting the Israeli show, on which another popular US show "Homeland" is based on, was a big responsibility.
"For us, as the writing team, because we had 'Hatufim' which is so universally relevant as an emotion, half of the battle has been won over there.
"The minus side is, if Gideon watches one episode and says 'What the hell, you just messed it up!' So there is a responsibly."
Gideon, however, said it would be wrong on his part to assume that the makers will need his help in adaptation and feels he will be a big fan of the show.
"It is an amazing experience. It would be wrong for me to think that they need my help in adapting it. The idea is to take it and turn it into your own. I am just going to be a big fan of the show," he added.
