The Mumbai Division of Western Raiwlay (WR) today launched a campaign 'Meter Se Chalo' at Mumbai Central and Bandra terminus stations here in its bid to curb practice of fleecing by auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers.
During the week-day long campaign, the drivers would be sensitised to charge commuters only as the per meter only and not to fleece them, a senior official from Commercial department of WR said.
He said the department has received several complaints against the drivers that they were forcing passengers to hire taxi which run "not by meter".
"The campaign aims to enforce taxi and auto-rickshaw drivers to run by meter and to stop fleecing passengers. Banners with campaign slogan, helpline numbers etc will be placed at prominent locations. Passengers will be guided to come to taxi parking site. RTO's toll free complaint no. 1800220110 will be circulated among passengers," he said.
Teams of Railway Protection Force (RPF), Government Railway Police (GRP), Regional Traffic Office and ticket checking staff will be deputed at each site during the two hour slot when maximum trains arrive, the officer said.
Drivers found to be fleecing passengers will be charged on the spot and punitive actions will be taken immediately as per rules.
