Wrestler Narsingh Yadav was Tuesday "suspended" from the Maharashtra police force for allegedly campaigning for a Congress candidate.

A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered against Yadav, who holds the rank of assistant commissioner.

"Yadav has been placed under suspension," a spokesperson of Mumbai Police told PTI.

Yadav, posted in the Local Arms division of Mumbai Police, Sunday allegedly participated in the campaign of Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam, who is contesting the Lok Sabha election from Mumbai-North West seat, a police official said.

The poll staff on duty sent a report to the state electoral office, following which the Amboli police Monday registered an offence against Yadav under the Representation of the People Act, he said.

A government servant can not take part in campaigning under the law.
