BJP chief Rajnath Singh today attacked the Uttar Pradesh government and the Centre for "continuously neglecting" the agricultural sector, and alleged that their wrong policies were forcing farmers to end life.
Rajnath, after meeting the family of farmer Satypal Singh who had allegedly committed suicide over heavy debts and prolonged illness, claimed that 24 farmers of the district have written to the President seeking permission to end life.
He gave a financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh to the family of the sugarcane farmer, and demanded that his loan be waived off and job be given to one of his family members.
Rajnath said BJP does not find the recommendations of Rangrajan committee, formed on the fixation of cane price, in the interest of the farmers as they neither talk of profitable price, nor do they mention remunerative price.
Farmers of the country would not have been forced to end lives had the Centre and UP government been sensitive towards their cause, he said.
He said the agriculture experts have expressed possibility of 2.5 crore tonne sugar production in the country this year, but despite this, the Centre is exporting 20 lakh tonne of stock from Brazil.
BJP's state in-charge Amit Shah and UP chief Laxmikant Bajpai were also accompanying Rajnath.
