Malik was taken into preventive custody from Badroo-Yaripora village of Kulgam, 70 kms from here, after he led a rally in violation of prohibitory orders, officials said.
They said police used batons to disperse his supporters and party colleagues who tried to prevent his detention, resulting in injuries to a couple of persons.
Over two dozen other JKLF activists led by senior Vice President Bashir Ahmad Butt were also detained by police at Kudwani area of Kulgam when they were on their way to join Malik, the officials said.
In a statement, Malik condemned the police action.
Referring to the Indo-Pak talks, he said, "The people of Kashmir support and welcome the steps taken by these two countries to normalise their ties but are concerned by their approach of sidelining Kashmir issue."
