Young Keralites getting prone to heart disease

Heart disease is on the rise among youngsters in Kerala, especially males, according to a study by a leading city hospital.
"CVD (Cardio Vascular Disease) is on the rise among youngsters in Kerala and young males are more prone to it. Smoking ranks high among the risk factors of CVD," V Jeyapal, senior cardiologist attached to Lords Hospital here said on the eve of The World Heart Day today.
He further said the study had found that around 12.9 per cent of the urban population and six to eight per cent of the rural populace are prone to heart disease or CVD.

"Analysis of records of patients at our clinic shows that a high 60-80 per cent suffer from systolic heart failure, which is the failure of the heart to pump blood," he said.
World Heart Day was created in 2000 to create awareness on heart diseases and stroke, the leading causes of deaths worldwide.
According to the World Heart Federation, heart diseases claim 17.3 million lives worldwide each year. It is expected that by 2030, 23 million people will die from CVDs annually.
The theme of World Heart Day this year is prevention and control of CVD with focus on women and children.
