Activists of Youth Congress here today staged a protest march opposing the hike in diesel and petrol prices, terming it as an "anti-poor" move by the BJP-led NDA government.
The protesters marched from the Youth Congress office to Shastri Bhawan where they tried to dismantle the security barricades and were detained by the police.
The petrol price was hiked yesterday by Rs 3.07 a litre, reversing its 3-month declining trend, while diesel rates went up by Rs 1.90 per litre.
"Our protest is for poor and middle class people who are worst hit by the increase in prices of petrol and diesel," Delhi Youth Congress president Amit Malik said demanding withdrawl of the hike.
The protesters also torched an effigy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi raising slogans against the central government.
The NDA government is "constantly raising" the prices of the petrol and diesel even though the prices of crude oil are going down in the international market, he added.
