The Youth Congress today staged a protest against the alleged failure of the Narendra Modi government in meeting the poll promises and were later lathicharged by the police when they made a bid to march towards Parliament.
Nearly 150 Youth Congress workers were detained at Jantar Mantar after they clashed with the police.
Youth from 22 states across the country had gathered in the national capital for the 'Jan Akrosh Rally', which was called by the Congress to expose the "failures" of BJP-led NDA government.
Police had to resort to a mild lathicharge after the protesters, who had come for the rally at around 11 AM, tried to march towards Parliament by breaching police barricades on Parliament Street.
The protesters were detained and taken to police station. They were later released, a police official said.
"The aim of the rally was to expose the failures of the Modi government. Non-fulfillment of promises and hoodwinking the Indian voter in the name of re-packaging of UPA schemes, deteriorating situation on the borders and price rise were major issues taken up during the protest," the Youth Congress said in a statement.

Taking a dig at Modi, it said, the leader who "claimed to have a 56-inch chest" and criticised the UPA leadership for LoC violations "has not" uttered a word against Pakistan.
"Similarly, the man who asserted that "desh nahi jhukne dunga" proved to be so "submissive" that while the Chinese PLA was repeatedly violating the LoC and intruding into the Indian territory, Modi was busy entertaining the Chinese Premier but could not make a statement on the serious incursions.
"Further, the BJP government in Gujarat distributed India maps showing Arunachal and J&K as disputed territory with China. Was national integrity sacrificed to please the Chinese?," the Youth Congress alleged.
Rajiv Satav, President of IYC claimed Modi is a "champion of nothing" but managing events and "glorifying" his personal profile.
He underlined that the Modi government was voted to power in anticipation of development and "acche din" but since they
(BJP) have not been able to deliver "acche din", they are now "diverting the focus towards their original plan of divisive politics."
Prominent Congress leaders such as Digvijay Singh, Sachin Pilot, Jitin Prasada and DPCC president Arvinder Singh Lovely too participated in the rally but they had left before the police stepped up security.
Later, several Youth Congress workers cleaned the premises where the demonstration took place.
"We on our own are cleaning the protest venue because we want this place to be clean. During protest, workers had dumped water bottles on the roads following which we cleaned the site," Amit Malik, the state Youth Congress president, said.
