A number of youths, engaged under a centrally-sponsored scheme, today blocked the Residency Road in the heart of the city protesting what they alleged failure of the government to release their salaries.
Dozens were detained and normal traffic on the busy road was restored after some time, police said.
The youths, working under Saakshar Bharat scheme, first assembled at Pratap Park and later blocked the Residency Road demanding release of their salaries.
"We are engaged under the scheme two years ago but so far no payment has been released in our favour," a protester told reporters.
"There are more than 8000 youths, including 4000 girls, rendering services under the scheme but the failure of the government to release their salaries have left them with no option but to hit the roads," he said.
"We are planning to intensify our agitation if the government fails to provide us immediate relief," said the protesters.
