MLA of Rayadurg constituency in Anantapur District K Ramachandra Reddy has been admitted to a hospital after he allegedly consumed pesticide, protesting alleged police high-handedness.
According to a senior Anantapur police official, Reddy, who is a local YSR Congress Party legislator, consumed poison, after which the police shifted him to a local hospital and later to Vijayanagara Institute of Medical Sciences in Bellary.
As the state is geared up for municipal polls, the police in all districts are in the process of verifying records of "trouble makers" and other anti-social elements as a "precautionary measure".
Along with some of his followers, Reddy reached the Rayadurg police station and demanded that the police stop placing curbs on his party workers and using allegedly third degree methods against his supporters.
After the police failed to heed his demand, he swiftly took out a bottle of pesticide and consumed it.
"As there is Section 30 of the Police Act is in force, the police tried to disperse the mob, after which Reddy consumed poison," the official told PTI.
