The UNICEF, Jharkhand, today conferred 'UNICEF celebrity supporter' status on 'Yuwa girls', the footballers who made marks in tournaments played in Spain.
According to a UNICEF release, the 'Yuwa' girls will support in its campaigns against child marriage, child labour, and support to girls' education, hand washing with soap and other areas.
'Yuwa' girls are already supporting the three-month long campaign against violence and abuse against children, launched by UNICEF and Jharkhand Police earlier this month.
The girls attracted attention when they finished third in the Gasteiz Football Cup played in Spain and later made it to the quarter-finals of the Donosti Cup, another of Spain's football tournament, in 2013.
"We are glad to be associated with UNICEF. If girls like us are given opportunities, we can excel in any area. I hope our example will inspire all girls in Jharkhand," Yuwa girls' captain Supriya said while speaking at a function here organised by UNICEF.
Job Zachariah, Chief, UNICEF Jharkhand, said, "Yuwa girls are icons for the youth and enjoy tremendous recognition across the country. These girls can inspire others. Their support to UNICEF will help in realising the rights of children especially girls in Jharkhand.
