Chief Election Commissioner Nasim Zaidi today condoled the demise of former CEC Ram Krishna Trivedi and recalled the way he had handled the "turbulent period" of 1982 when assembly elections were held in Assam amid ethnic strife.
A former Gujarat Governor and former Chief Election Commissioner between 1982 and 1985, Trivedi passed away in Lucknow yesterday after prolonged illness. He was 94.
In his condolence message, Zaidi recalled the "exemplary manner in which he steered the Commission during the turbulent period of Assam elections in 1982-83."
He said the example set by Trivedi showed that the poll body is fully equipped to deal with any situation arising in the course of conducting elections.
Trivedi was honoured with Padma Vibhushan as a recognition to his services towards the nation.
He was Gujarat Governor between 1986 and 1990 and the CEC between June, 1982 and December, 1985.
