Online restaurant guide Zomato has made a foray into Canada with the launch of its operations in Toronto and has earmarked USD 10 million (over Rs 61 crore) as part of its ongoing expansion strategy in that country.
The company provides detailed information for over 11,000 restaurants, making it the most exhaustive social restaurant discovery service in the Greater Toronto Area, Zomato said in a statement.
Commenting on the development, Zomato Founder and CEO Deepinder Goyal said: "We've earmarked USD 10 million for our expansion in Canada, and are committed to making Zomato the go-to restaurant discovery service in the country."
Canada is truly a great starting point for Zomato before it thinks of getting into the United States, he added.
Unveiling the road map the company plans to take in Canada, Zomato Canada Country Manager Jeremy Potvin said: "We aim to have a 50-member team within the next 12 months. Over the next few months, we plan to expand to other cities across Canada, including Vancouver, Montreal, Ottawa, and Calgary."
The company already has a sizable local team and is in the process of growing it further, he added.
Zomato also unveiled their new logo today. Commenting on the initiative, Goyal said : "This logo transcends languages and cultures. It captures the story of millions of meals and experiences being shared with a vast global community of people. The story of 'people and food'."
Started in 2008 by Deepinder Goyal and Pankaj Chaddah, Zomato provides information of over 2,70,000 restaurants across 17 countries. It currently serves over 30 million monthly visitors globally and employs over 800 people.
