ZSI discovers new catfish in Arunachal river

A new species of catfish has been discovered by the scientists of the local branch of the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) in a river of Lower Subansiri district of Arunachal Pradesh.
The moderate sized Glyptosternine torrential catfish, under the genus Creteuchiloglanis, was found last month in the Pange river, which is located at an altitude of 1600 meter near Aro-Lenching, about 10 km from Ziro, the district headquarters.
A survey team led by Dr Bikramjit Sinha and Lakpa Tamang of the ZSI here spotted the new fish, Sinha who is the officer-in-charge of the centre said in a statement here today.

The news of the discovery was recently reported in a Japan-based international journal 'Ichthyological Research.'
This is the third species in the genus Creteuchiloglanis after two such species - Creteuchiloglanis Kamengensis and Creteuchiloglanis Payjab - were discovered from the Norgum river in Kalaktang in 1976 and the Yomgo River in Mechuka this year, Sinha said.
The scientists have named the catfish species as 'Creteuchiloglanis Arunachalensis' and preserved it at the ZSI here, the statement said.
