Supreme Court upholds ban on sale of large diesel vehicles in Delhi
A clutch of carmakers had on Monday sought a review of the ban on sale of large diesel cars
Reuters Mumbai The Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld a December ruling that temporarily banned the sale of large diesel cars in New Delhi to combat toxic smog in India's capital.
A bench headed by Chief Justice TS Thakur had been expected to rule on Tuesday on a separate green tax on all diesel cars in the city, but has yet to announce its decision.
Car makers affected by the ban on sale of diesel vehicles in the national capital region had on Monday moved the Supreme Court for a review. Mahindra & Mahindra, Tata Motors, Mercedes-Benz, General Motors and Toyota Kirloskar had filed individual petitions on Monday in the apex court seeking a review of the ban while stressing their vehicles met all emission norms.
The apex court on December 16 ordered the prohibition of sale of all diesel vehicles having engines bigger than 2,000 cc in Delhi-NCR till March 31, 2016, because of rising pollution.
