In a new study on micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the state, the Gujarat council of the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham) has suggested that the state government should set up special economic zones (SEZs) for small units. The study also states that special tax holiday schemes should be provided for the development of the MSME sector.

“Normally, SEZ facilities are available for large enterprises. We have suggested as part of the study that it should be extended to MSMEs. There should also be tax holiday schemes and women-centric schemes for MSMEs, since they do not have collateral for loans,” said Sunil Kakkad, chairman of Assocham’s Gujarat Council, while talking about the study.

The study also focused on cluster development for the enhancement of MSMEs’ performance. As against the existing six clusters in Gujarat recognised by the ministry of MSME, the Assocham study has suggested development of 16 new clusters which could accommodate 32,000 SMEs and generate 6.5 lakh jobs directly and indirectly.

The industry body has also suggested allocation of Rs 500 crore for the provision of basic and essential infrastructure in the proposed clusters.
