Broadway dreams: Bangalore-based theatre group Antardwand is commemorating 100 years of George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion with the staging of My Fair Lady, the Broadway musical and film version. The familiar story of Eliza Doolittle and Professor Henry Higgins is being brought to life by a 50-member cast with music, dancing and costumes from Britain of the 1940s.

Unexpected encounters: With women in the two lead roles, this is the female version of acclaimed playwright Neil Simon's The Odd Couple. In the play, Olive Madison is divorced and living in her apartment in New York. Madison invites the newly-divorced, suicidal Florence Unger to stay with her but the experiment has unexpected consequences. The play has been directed by Jagdish Raja.

Jamming it up: The Family Cheese may be a rock/fusion jam band, but their repertoire spans blues, funk, reggage, alternate rock, hip-hop and jazz. The three members of the Mumbai-based band are all alumni of the Swarnabhoomi Academy of Music, and their music is a culmination of their diverse interests.

Radical traditions: Chitrakoot Art Gallery presents ‘Forms and Fables’, a contemporary art exhibition which will showcase the art works by eminent artists like Tapas Sarkar, Aditya Basak, Amitabha Dhar, Chanchal Mukherjee, Atin Basak, Sukanta Das, Ashoke Mullick, Pradip Rakshit and Arup Das. Brought together by Khushboo Kejriwal for this show, they celebrate traditional themes with forms of expression that are radically different from the past revealing deft individual touches.

Bimal Roy Retrospective: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalay is hosting an exhibition on the life and times of eminent film director Bimal Roy. This will be accompanied by screenings of films including Do Bigha Zameen, the 1953 socialist film starring Balraj Sahni and Nirupa Roy. Also to be screened are Madhumati, one of the earliest films to talk of reincarnation; Parakh, a satirical look at Indian democracy and Usne Kaha Tha, which was produced by Roy.

Russian Film Fiesta: As part of its weekly screenings, the Russian Centre for Science and Culture will be screening films from the region. Tuner is a 2004 arthouse grotesque comedy by Kira Muratova. Passions, another film by the director, is a comedy based on horse race betting. Also to be screened is Moscow, I love you, a compilation of 18 short films by Russian directors.

Tribute to Rabindranath Tagore: Eminent filmmaker-poet Gulzar and the doyen of the Patiala gharana Ajoy Chakrabarty will pay a tribute to Rabindranath Tagore. Gulzar will recite his Hindi translations of selected works of Rabindranath, while Chakrabarty will showcase some of Tagore’s compositions: dhrupad, khayal, thumri, geet and songs based on Western tunes. Tagore, the Nobel laureate, poet, novelist and composer has had a large-scale influence not only on Indian literature but music as well. His body of musical works boasts over 2,000 songs based on various ragas and talas.

Theatre

Club Desire, an NCPA Production in collaboration with Arpana, is an English play inspired by the French opera Carmen by Georges Bizet. The story is placed in the contemporary nightclub setting in Mumbai. The adaptation brings up universal questions about the nature of love, tradition, modernity, freedom, possession, order and anarchy. Written by Sapan Saran and directed by Sunil Shanbag, the play features Poulami Ghosh, Jaimini Pathak, Suhas Ahuja, Gagan Dev Riar.
