Alcatel yesterday unveiled an enterprise voice, data, applications and service portfolio, OmniSolutions that will enable convergence. The company also announced the launch of an Internet Protocol (IP)-based voice communications platform, OmniPCX 4400 in the Asia Pacific market.

OmniPCX 4400 offers voice enabled PC-integrated business tools, mobile access to voice and data server applications, web-based management of voice and data infrastructure, access to network services using IP, integrated server/directory options and surf and talk options.

Installation of the OmniPCX4400 is expected to commence in India in the earlier part of the third quarter. The company has begun negotiations for the installation of OmniSolutions with a number of players in the call centre business.

The $25 billion telecom major will now be able to offer a comprehensive package for the call centre applications based on IP. The system will enable call centres to offer services based on Voice-over-IP, which is not permitted in India.

"What we are saying is invest for the future. Keep the platform ready and you can take advantage of it when the regulatory issues are resolved," Alcatel regional director (Asia Pacific) for the Services and Distribution Division (SDD) Ian Margeson said. "The architecture has been in place for about five years. We are not launching anything new. What we are basically doing is launching an IP plug-in to the existing infrastructure. We are matching the business drivers," he added.

OmniSolutions is a scaleable solution that can be used by 50 to 50,000 users. The system can be used on IP phones, multimedia terminals and mobile phones. "The OmniSolutions offers enterprises large and small alike, a web-enabled and end-to-end telecommunications solution to leverage the Internet to achieve their strategic objectives," director (SDD) for the Indian subcontinent Viswanathan Pradeep said.

OmniSolutions is the result of acquisition of companies including Packet Engines, Assured Access, Xylan, Internet Devices and Genesys.
