Maharashtra governor P C Alexander yesterday asked the state government to review the several Rent Control Acts

in order to create a healthy investment climate.

In his address at the `Advantage Maharashtra convention here, the governor said Mumbai has become the costliest city after Tokyo.

If we are attracting investors, we must also provide them with reasonable accommodation. We cant expect them to stay in Aurangabad or other places. We should help them stay and settle down in Mumbai, he said to a cheering audience.

Alexander urged politicians to muster courage to make people pay for electricity, instead of, depending upon the state for subsidies. The times are over for free grants. People have to pay for things now.

In a speech punctuated with applause, the governor called for higher investment in infrastructure.

At present, our investment in infrastructure is five per cent of our GDP. If we are to attain over eight per cent GDP growth, investment rate in infrastructure should be higher.

He lamented that infrastructural bottlenecks have delayed progress in the country. Quoting a World Bank study, Alexander said turnover in ports in western countries, is 6.5 hours. In India, the rate is four to 10 days.
