Sugar scrips in the B1 group shot into the limelight following reports that the government was considering an immediate release of additional free sale quota to check rise in sugar prices.
Balrampur Chini hit the upper end of the filter circuit at Rs 105.50 with the scrip gaining Rs 8.75 over the previous close.
Trading was frozen in Dhampur Sugars at Rs 67.25 with no sellers for the scrip.

Thiru Arooran Sugars gained Rs 4 over the previous close to end the day at Rs 74 on the BSE.
The Indian Rayon stock dominated the A group scrips performance yesterday following its excellent corporate performance and reports that the company would be shortly holding a meeting to discuss the bonus issue. The scrip touched the upper end of the filter at BSE and NSE at Rs 396.25 and Rs 386.40 respectively.
Another scrip, which its 52-week highs at both exchanges despite low volumes, was ABB. HPCL witnessed a negotiated deal of 1 lakh shares at Rs 420. Grasim, IPCL and Tata Chemicals were being quoted at a higher rate on the BSE as compared to the NSE.
Exide and Asian Electronics, which were on the ascend till a day before, figured among the losers yesterday.
Shipping Corporation continued its upward path with the scrip touching its 52-week high at the NSE before ending the day at Rs 51.10. The scrip recorded a turnover of Rs 1.81 crore for the day.
No kerb trading: Trading in the kerb session was suspended yesterday following the death of the brother of kerb dealer Shantilal Purohit.
The sensex ended the day at 3801.71, down 39.40 over the previous close.
Trading at BSE was sluggish due to lack of fresh buying support from FIIs and operators on fears of a hike in oil price.
