Minister of state for petroleum and natural gas T R Baalu yesterday said productivity and safety are interlinked and total commitment to safety at all levels will prevent losses and contribute to a healthy and clean environment.
Inaugurating the eighth oil industry safety workshop, the minister lauded the efforts of industry in formulatingdisaster management plans at all its locations for onsite and offsite contingencies.
Calling for total safety, he emphasised the need for actual implementation of the lessons learnt from past accidents.

The awardees for best safety record in 1993-94 are Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL) for best overall safety in process and product organisation and cross-country pipelines, Lubrizol India for refinery installations, Oil India for oil and gas production units, IBP for marketing operations excluding LPG and Bharat Petroleum for LPG marketing.
For 1994-95, GAIL bagged the award for best safety in process product organisations, Lubrizol for refinery installations, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (Hazira) for oil and gas production units, Indian Oil Blending for marketing operations excluding LPG, Bharat Petroleum for LPG marketing and ONGC for cross-country pipelines.
The oil industry safety awards, instituted in 1987 to commemorate the 40th year of Indias independence, are meant to increase safety awareness and inculcate competitiveness among oil companies to improve their safety performance.
Citing statistics from the Oil Industry Safety Directorate (OISD), the minister said 80 per cent of accidents can be attributed to human error and safety efforts have to be directed towards training and motivation of employees. He also stressed the need for constant upgradation and review of safety management systems.
Executive director of OISD J K Verma said safety was a valuable tool to prevent losses of a vital resource like oil.
