Banks falter in meeting annual credit target in April-June

Achievement in eight districts below 50%.

Commercial banks operating in Odisha have faltered on meeting Annual Credit Plan (ACP) for the April-June quarter of 2012-13 with achievement being under 50 per cent in eight out of 30 districts in the state.

These eight districts include Gajapati (47 per cent), Kandhamal (39 per cent), Keonjhar (35 per cent), Koraput (32 per cent), Mayurbhanj (36 per cent), Nayagarh (46 per cent), Nabarangpur (34 per cent), Nuapada (43 per cent) and Sonepur (38 per cent).

In economically backward Gajapati district, credit flow to the agriculture sector has been only 58 per cent of the target while that under non-farm sectors (NFS) and other priority sectors (OPS) are even more disappointing at 28 per cent and 20 per cent respectively.

Similarly, in Naxal infested Nabarangpur district, achievement in agriculture lending by banks is tepid at only 40 per cent. Achievement under NFS and OPS in this district stood at eight per cent and 28 per cent respectively.

According to latest data compiled by State Level Bankers’ Committee (SLBC), the commercial banks achieved nearly 100 per cent of the overall credit disbursement target in Balasore and Jajpur districts. The stipulated target was overshot in three districts- Sundergarh (163 per cent), Kendrapara (108 per cent) and Khurda (105 per cent).

Overall, all commercial banks lent Rs 4,226.55 crore in the April-June quarter, achieving 76 per cent of the targeted Rs 5,553.72 crore. While achievement under crop loan touched a high of 90 per cent, achievement under agriculture term loans and loans to allied sectors stood at 47 per cent and 20 per cent respectively. Credit flow to NFS was 137 per cent of the target and in case of OPS, the achievement stood at 61 per cent.

All public sector banks taken together clocked 71 per cent achievement of ACP in the stated period with their private sector counterparts achieving 64 per cent.
