The Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) today announced the commissioning of its 200-mw national high voltage direct current (HVDC) project stage-II.

The project, executed by BHEL on a turnkey basis, has linked the 196 km direct current transmission line between Barsoor in Chhattisgarh and Lower Sileru in Andhra Pradesh, a company statement said here.

The 200 mw, 200 kv stage-II of national HVDC project is an upgradation of the existing 100 mw, 100 kv stage-I project, commissioned by BHEL in 1989. The project has been jointly funded by the Department of Heavy Industries, ministries of power and information and technology, BHEL and the two utilities -- Andhra Pradesh State Electricity Board (APSEB) and Madhya Pradesh Electricity Board (MPEB).

Prior to setting up of the project, both APSEB and MPEB could not use 220 kv AC line efficiently for bulk transfer of power between Barsoor and Lower Sileru due to synchronisation problem as both the boards maintained different frequencies.

HVDC technology is relevant to India's needs, where large blocks of power have to be evacuated over long distances from remotely-located thermal, hydro and nuclear power stations to the regions of utilisation.

Earlier, India's first commercial HVDC line between Rihand and Dadri in Uttar Pradesh, was successfully commissioned by BHEL-ABB consortium. The consortium has also successfully commissioned and handed over to MSEB the Rs 990 crore Chandrapur-Padghe HVDC project in Maharashtra.
