Big Foreign Banks Take A Major Beating

The Indian operations of Credit Lyonnais has incurred a loss of Rs 5.50 crore in 1997-98 as against the previous year's net profit of Rs 14.92 crore. The local operations of other French banks like Banque Nationale de Paris and Societe Generale have shown a dip in net profit of 57.43 per cent and 74 per cent to Rs 18.14 crore and 10.35 crore respectively in 1997-98.

While the Indian operations of State Bank of Mauritius has shown an increase in net profit by 171 per cent to Rs 8.70 crore, the profits of Cho Hung Bank (CHB) is up by 249 per cent to Rs 4.12 crore. Krung Thai Bank (KTB) has shown an increase in net profit to Rs 2.30 crore from Rs 96,000 reported in the previous year.

Credit Lyonnais has shown a dip in advances to Rs 428 crore as against Rs 514 crore while deposits have gone up to Rs 672 crore from Rs 595 crore in the previous year.

The contingent liability of the bank has gone to Rs 8267 crore from Rs 5246 crore reported in the previous year. The net investment has gone up to Rs 219 crore from Rs 198 crore last year.

State Bank of Mauritius has shown growth in deposits and advances by 436 per cent and 127 per cent to Rs 70.81 crore and Rs 102.76 crore respectively in 1997-98. Investment in India was up to Rs 20.29 from Rs 6.5 crore, up by 212 per cent.

In 1997-98, provisions and contingencies stood at Rs 5.11 crore of which non performing and doubtful assets came down from Rs 9.03 crore to Rs 0.75 crore.

The Banque Nationale De Paris (BNP) has reported a marginal drop in advances to Rs 581.9 crore to Rs 599.20 crore while deposits rose to Rs 781.75 crore from Rs 644.94 crore.

Investments rose by 87 per cent to Rs 673.4 crore while provision and contingencies dropped to Rs 32.90 crore from Rs 38.5 crore in the previous year.

Societe Generale has reported a deposit growth of 11.93 per cent to Rs 656.11 crore and dip in advance by 17 per cent to Rs 459.5 crore. Investments rose by 23 per cent to Rs 302.5 crore.

Provision and contingencies stood at Rs 13.27 crore as against Rs 18.99 crore in the previous year.

Advances, deposits and investment of KTB stood at Rs 5.43 crore, Rs 0.32 crore and Rs 0.90 crore respectively. Provisions and contingencies stood at Rs 1.1 crore as against Rs 59,000 last year.

CHB has shown a drop in deposit to Rs six crore as against Rs 25 crore last year. Advances went up to Rs 46.15 crore from Rs 39.76 crore last year while investment dropped from Rs 28.34 crore to Rs 18.83 crore.
