Bottlers Submit Alternative Proposal To Coke

The proposal, being worked out by key franchisee bottlers of the multinational, comes in response to the Coke offer to buy out the bottlers in return for a nominal shareholding in the two proposed subsidiaries to be set up in the country through CocaCola South Asia Holdings.

The key bottlers say that the offer made by Coke in London a few days ago has met with stiff opposition from most of the Coke franchisees.

The proposal, which will be put before Coke chief executive Richard Nicholas, would also be discussed in a proposed meeting of bottlers with middle and far east president Douglas Daft who is expected in India in November.

The bottlers would also ask for Coke's intervention in pulling up bottlers who are not maintaining product quality or are not putting enough money in distribution and marketing of the product. They would also push for Coke's dis inclination towards existing bottlers going public to finance their expansion and modernisation plans.
