The trading sentiment on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) remained upbeat yesterday and the NSE-50 index closed at 1,239.15 points against the previous close of 1,236.55 points, a gain of 2.6 points.
The index opened at 1,248.10, touched a high of 1252.70, went on to a low of 1,234.95 before closing at of 1,239.15. The Midcap index closed at 1,314.20 points, registering a gain of 15.60 points over the previous close of 1,314.20. The total traded turnover on the exchange touched Rs 1,888.75 with over 7.84 crore shares changing hands.
Market sources informed that the foreign institutional investors were still active at specific counters and they continued to buy in the FERA scrips. The current boom is lead by the FIIs and they are making heavy purchases based on fresh evaluations of the scrips, informed a NSE dealer.

The Midcap index has shown substantial jump in the past few days indicating that the small and the midcap scrips are coming in the lime light. There should be more and more activity in the midcap companies in the days to come, which should be a positive development, said an NSE dealer.
Among the top five gainers were Indo Gulf Fertilisers, which closed at Rs 37.35 ( Rs 34.90), ICICI at Rs 93.40 (Rs 87.35), Essar Steel at Rs 22.80 (Rs 21.40), Ashok Leyland at Rs 92.40 (Rs 87.15) and MRPL at Rs 21.80 (Rs 20.60).
Among the top five losers during yesterdays trading were, Nestle India which closed at Rs 318.30 (Rs 332.50), Colgate at Rs 329.45 (Rs 343.85), IFCI at Rs 35.95 (Rs 36.90) Castrol at Rs 609.55 (Rs 622.75) and ABB at Rs 647.75 (Rs 658.85).
Reliance Industries topped the list of scrips which registered the highest traded turnover. The scrip witnessed total traded turnover of Rs 455.39 crore. It closed at Rs 367.05 over the previous close of Rs 365.45. The other scrips which recorded high turnovers were, ITC (Rs 267.97 crore), Tisco (Rs 196.45 crore), Tata
Tea (Rs 136.84 crore). Hectic trading was also witnessed in Telco (Rs 127.38 cr), L&T (Rs 85.84 cr), MTNL (Rs 50.46 cr), and Bank of India (Rs 33.99 cr).
