Finance ministers of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, Delhi and the Union territory of Chandigarh are scheduled to meet today to discuss measures to bring about uniformity in tax rates throughout north India.

The ministers had met recently to discuss the possibility of introducing uniform rates for select commodities and had decided that the region would switch over to value added tax system from April 1, 1999. At that meeting, the states had also agreed to introduce uniform sales tax rates on 10 commodities.

Motor vehicles, which witnessed intense tax war between Delhi and Haryana, is one of the items on which the introduction of uniform rates has been agreed to.
